Andrea Centazzo
multi-media concert
for
Solo Percussion, Digital Percussion
and
Video Images
Regarded as “one of the most influential composer/percussionist of the
last 30 years”
(Modern Drummer – Michael Bettine – 6/04)
Andrea
Centazzo has performed in many of the most important festivals and
concert seasons both in Europe and the USA as soloist, conductor and
with other great artists. His career ranges from free improvisation with
players like Don Cherry, John Zorn, Steve Lacy and many more to
conducting his operas, symphonies and performing solo concerts in Europe
and USA, as well in South America and Far East.
After an
intense season of improvised music (1972-83) in 1984 Andrea made is
debut as filmmaker with Tiara, a video film journey
in his childhood. The video won all the video
festival around the word and launched a new chapter in Andrea Artistic
adventure. After may videos and soundtrack, Andrea decided to blend all
his artistic experiences in a new medium, the Multimedia solo concert.
Using
acoustic & digital percussion,
Andrea integrates the images that he
shot and edited with
his musical composition in a mix of endless
possibilities.
Improvisation
is great part of this new expressive process, creating every time a
different setting for the images projected with a
vast array of instruments.
All the
sounds are triggered in real time. no
pre-recorded parts are used in this kind of program.

1)
DISCOVERIES I.
The
concert opening is a piece from his latest multimedia Einstein’s Cosmic
Messengers. It’s a solo percussion with sampled choir ending in a
rhythmic improvisation on a tabla loop.

2)
ANCIENT RAIN.
The
hypnotic Balinese atmospheres permeate this composition, starting with
free gong playing and the sound of rain opens this composition conveying
a sense of serenity. Yet this soon turns into a sort of hypnotic trance
during the Balinese dances especially created and shot for this project.

3)
TIARE.
A minimal
piece in 7/8 originally inserted in the award winning Centazzo movie
Tiare.
4)
ANATOMY OF THE SKULL.
From the
Multimedia concert Eternal Traveler inspired by Leonardo da Vinci. It’s
a solo percussion based on Gregorian chanting and the beat of the human
heart with all the anatomic Leonardo drawing. The fictional scenes
showing Leonardo (?) doing his experiments were shot for this project.
5)
MEDITATING IN A KYOTO GARDEN.
Composed
in Japan and part of the multimedia show AQUA, this piece is a
improvisation on gongs on some pre-composed flute and string sequences.
Images shot in Kyoto and Vietnam.
6)
ANCIENT FUTURE.
This is a
11/8 compositions based on the overlapping of different rhythmic
sequences from Mandala multimedia show. The video shows a sci-fi kind of
city: actually the Torrance Exxon refinery and Downtown LA!
7)
SACRED SPIRIT.
The last
piece is an epic celebration of the native Indians culture perfect
balance between man and nature also from Mandala multimedia concert. The
video was shot in the Mojave Desert and in Madagascar. Indian photos by
Edward Curtis.
